Queen Sheba, a charming Ethiopian restaurant on Broadway @17th.
ALL YOU CAN EAT LUNCH BUFFET
VEGETARIAN & VEGAN
Queen Sheba, a charming Ethiopian restaurant on Broadway @17th. Ethiopian food is more communal than almost any other type of ethnic food. The hallmark of Ethiopian cuisine [+]consists of sharing food on one giant plate and using enjera a spongy, sour, pliable flat bread to scoop up the various shared dishes. enjera is the common thread of almost every meal for Ethiopia’s middle and upper classes. Prepared much as it was 1,000 years ago, enjera is both an eating utensil and a palette for other foods to lie on. It lines the giant plate, soaking up the sauces and spices of the various dishes piled on top. The eating of this lining or “tablecloth” signifies that the meal is officially over, completing the communal Ethiopian dining experience. "Subscribers Choice Awards" Zion Taddese and her brother Eskinder opened Queen Sheba Restaurant on Howe Avenue in August of 2003 and have recently move their location to 1704 Broadway downtown Sacramento which is a larger restaurant that allows them to serve more customers. Together, the siblings offer friendly and attentive service along with spicy, flavorful dishes that follow the traditions of Ethiopian dining. You can enjoy, the famed honey wine, tej, which Ethiopians often make themselves, with a unique taste that complements the spices in the food. Combination plates on the menu, allow you to sample different dishes arranged symmetrically on a giant plate. Dishes such as Gomen, a dish of cooked spinach, collard greens, onions and garlic. Gomen may remind you of collards in soul-food cooking. Then experience, miser kik wot (wot meaning “stew”), a satisfying, mild-flavored dish made with lentils and spices. In the combination you will find two similar-tasting dishes, doro wot and gored gored. Doro wot is a popular dish with chicken leg and hard-boiled egg, served on a dark bed of simmered vegetables and spices. It has the color, consistency and heat of a fiery chili. Doro wot is of the chicken family, the gored gored has cubes of beef in a similar mixture, spiced in Ethiopian fashion, with berbere. Berbere, a mix of at least a dozen spices, including paprika, ginger, cardamom, hot chilies and turmeric, giving Ethiopian foods their distinct flavors.
In addition to these we have many Vegetarian and Vegan dishes for you to enjoy. You'll end your dining experience eating the large “tablecloth” Enjera, which is soaked with the sauces and spices of the various dishes. Finish with coffee, coffee drinking has a great significance in Ethiopia. Ceremonial in nature, beans are freshly roasted, ground and brewed and then served in tiny cups with sugar but no milk. Drink three cupfuls for a blessing. The flavors and customs of Ethiopian dining will provide you with the experience of food from the "cradle of civilization". [-] Categories:

Nopalitos

- Sacramento CA -
Nopalitos a Southwest and Tex-Mex Style Restaurant In Sacramento - East Sacramento Restaurant
At Nopalitos Southwestern Café, every menu item is the product of creativity and culinary craftsmanship. And, some items have become legendary. Dave's muffins are outstanding, the pancakes are amazing (they were featured on the cover of [+]the February 2009 Sactown Magazine), and every other item on the menu is equally excellent in its own way. The café has become a landmark in the East Sacramento area and continues to grow in popularity.
The nopal cactus, often called the prickly pear, produces two important food crops. One is the "nopalitos," the elongated pad, and the other is the prickly "pear" fruit of the cactus. So central was nopal to the indigenous culture of Mexico that its name forms the root of Mexico City 's Aztec name, Tenochtitlan, meaning "place of the cactus.” The nopal cactus is also the basis for the name of the Nopalitos Southwestern Café….a popular, cozy neighborhood café located on the corner of 56th and H Street in "East Sacramento," California.
Dave and Rose Hanke, both trained chefs, opened Nopalitos in April of 1992. Dave, viewed by his fans as an outstanding chef, developed his own recipes. Rose focused on managing the counter and keeping all those important records. Between the two of them, and helped by two assistants, Nopalitos soon became one of the most popular cafés in Sacramento. When the couple opened Nopalitos in 1992, they decided to close on the weekends because Dave wanted to coach his son, Aaron, then 7, in baseball. Aaron grew up and eventually played a couple of years in the big leagues with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Dave and Rose decided they actually enjoyed having a life beyond the cafe, so they never opened on the weekends or evenings. [-] Categories:

Lotus
The lotus flower grows in muddy water and rises above the surface to bloom with remarkable beauty. At night the flower closes and sinks underwater, at dawn it rises and opens again. Untouched by the impurity, lotus signifies the purity of [+]heart and mind and its flower represents long life, health, honor and good luck. Traditionally, the lotus flower is often symbolized with 8 petals.
8
The number Eight is an important number in many cultures and religions.
In China, 8 is considered a lucky number because it pronounced similarly to the word “prosperity” (發; fā). The number Eight (八 hachi) is also considered a lucky number in Japanese culture, but the reason is different from that in Chinese culture. 8 gives an idea of growing prosperously, because the character (八) broadens gradually.
In Buddhist tradition, the number Eight means completion. In Taoism, Bagua, an ancient symbol with 8 sides, represents the forces in the phenomenal world. The Egyptians believe that 8 is the number of balance and equilibrium. In Hebrew history, 8 is perfect intelligence. In Hinduism, 8 is the number of wealth and abundance. Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish holiday that starts on the 25th day of Kislev.
Lotus meets 8
Stories and facts about Lotus and the number Eight can go on and on and on ……
At Lotus 8 , we are creating our own story. A new culinary story. We named our restaurant by combining a beautiful flower and a lucky number. With this same philosophy, our kitchen chefs created their own interpretation of modern Chinese Cuisine. By using both traditional and new cooking techniques and experimenting with various ingredients from around the world, our innovative approach brings a perfect harmony to all of our dishes, and most importantly still maintains the true authenticity of traditional Chinese flavors.

Mr. Pickle's Sandwich Shop - Natomas, Sacramento CA 95834
It all started in 1975 at King Plaza Deli in Daly City, California. King Plaza was a regular hang out for Frank and his friends. Through his personality and sharp [+]wit, Frank was able to negotiate his first job, at the deli, cleaning tables and sweeping floors for $3.00 a day, at the age of eight. He continued to move up the ranks eventually working each and every position in the deli. Frank demonstrated his commitment to the job staying with King Plaza until he started high school at the age of fourteen.
In the meantime, Frank studied hard, knowing that one day he wanted to own his own deli. At sixteen, Frank began working in a local pizza parlor. He worked at a couple of local parlors over the next few years, increasing his experience in the food and service industry.
During these years of servicing the public Frank understood what people were looking for in a product and what they demanded in service. Frank opened his first Mr. Pickle’s in 1995, in San Mateo, California. Mr. Pickle’s took San Mateo by storm. Frank engaged the local high schools in naming sandwiches and participating in one of the first Mr. Pickle’s TV commercials. The local kids were devoted to Mr. Pickle’s and were considered “regulars.”
The community loved Frank and his team. The line out the door proved it daily. After a couple of years, the demand to spread the ‘pickle love’ encouraged Frank to open up another shop. The reputation of Mr. Pickle’s spread like wildfire. Everyone loved Mr. Pickle’s and if they hadn’t tried it, they surely had heard about it.
To date, Frank has opened numerous shops and his reputation has remained the same in every community.
FRANK F. FAGUNDES
FOUNDER, FRANCHISE DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
Frank Fagundes has twenty-five+ years of experience in the food service industry. He is an energetic, highly motivated individual, originally from Daly City, California. He took his convictions of hard work, discipline, and commitment and applied it to the first Mr. Pickle’s Sandwich Shop® opened in 1994. He formulated his system through his years of experiences as a customer, as an employee, and a manager, and then applied that system to his own shop, which catapulted the original shop to be the choice Sandwich spot in San Mateo County.

Mezcal Taqueria a Mexican Restaurant in Sacramento - Natomas
Our family gatherings and special moments have been always accompanied with amazing food. Our carne asadas (what we called having a BBQ) brings family and friends together and I wanted to create an environment where I could share moments like [+]this with others.
Fast forward to 2008; I was blessed with an opportunity to purchase a restaurant in South Natomas. My family and friends, business partners, and our cooks, we worked day and night getting Mezcal ready and creating recipes for our new menu. We were all exhausted, but excited to share our family and new recipes with everyone. I wanted to create a space where everyone can feel like a guest in my home.
We opened our doors on March 9th in 2009 and we have been blessed by all of the community support and patronage.

Our Food
Mexican food and its techniques are rich in history with influences from the Mayans, the Aztecs, and other Pre-Hispanic cultures. Later on the Spanish and other Europeans brought new crops, stock, and influences. Nowadays Mexican food is diverse and ever evolving. Each state and region have their own techniques and flavors. Here at Mezcal Grill we offer dishes that offer a little bit of everything from all 32 states. For example we bring you carnitas just like our family has been doing them in the state of Michoacan; techniques from the states of Jalisco and Guanajuato, and flavors from the states of Veracruz and Sinaloa. And of course let's not forget about our Tex-Mex and Californian influences.

Whatever the occasion, choose Morton's The Steakhouse, and let us exceed your expectations!
How it all began....
Morton's actually exists today because of...hamburgers! Years ago, before co-founders Arnie Morton and Klaus Fritsch really knew one another, they both worked at the Playboy Club in Montreal. The club was changing the menu, and Klaus cooked a hamburger that was sent out for Arnie to try. Arnie burst into the kitchen, demanding to know "Who cooked that hamburger?"
When Klaus stepped forward, he wasn't sure if Arnie was going to be pleased or not but was relieved to hear him say that it was the best he'd ever tasted. From that day forward, they called it the "Million-Dollar Hamburger"!
More than 3 decades later....
Morton's has grown to over 74 restaurants, but the vision is the same today as it was when we opened our first restaurant in Chicago in 1978. Quality. Consistency. Genuine Hospitality.
Driven by the desire to provide genuine hospitality–for our guests and our employees–we offer a setting where people truly care about one another, and show it in everything they do. The high level of respect and enthusiasm that runs through our entire organization is evident in many ways, including the longevity of our staff and managers, some of whom have been with us for decades.

Mulvaney's Building & Loan Sacramento CA, Midtown
Mulvaney's B&L brings handcrafted new American cuisine to your table. Our relationship with the food and where it comes from is the driving force of the way we do business. Our restaurant menu changes daily as we focus on the subtle changes [+]of the seasonal harvest of our local farms. As Patrick Mulvaney often says, “whatever comes in the front door goes on your plate.”
Our down to earth yet whimsical style is what makes us smile. Please come, sit and eat.
WHAT’S IN A NAME
In the movie It’s a Wonderful Life, George Bailey learns that his family business—Bailey Bros. Building & Loan—is more than a business. It’s the glue that holds the community together. We lovingly honor that notion by incorporating the Building & Loan name into our own as a way of embracing the community that has been so good to us.
WHO WE ARE
Mulvaney’s B&L is many things. We’re a restaurant that specializes in hand-crafted New American cuisine, a farm-to-table devotee that celebrates the efforts of the growers, ranchers, brewers and winemakers who are our neighbors, purveyors and friends.
Set in a historic 1893 firehouse, with its original brick walls and soaring ceilings, Mulvaney’s B&L is also a nexus of Sacramento: a place where we serve up impeccable and creative fare (our menu changes daily in step with the local growing seasons), and facilitate the connections of the guests we love to host.
Our “wonderful old B&L” is the brainchild – no, the passion – of owners Patrick and Bobbin Mulvaney, who bring more than a half century and six time zones’ worth of experience to their mission. We strive to provide our guests with the best our region has to offer and a place to have their own culinary experience.
There was a time when Sacramento didn’t want to be an ag town. It has been nearly 20 years since the idea for Soil Born Farms was planted. Agriculture, as it has since the 1840’s, was booming in the Sacramento Valley. There were some early voices singing the virtues of our agricultural heritage to the growing population of city slickers back then.
Leadership at the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op and Harald Hoven, the master gardener at Fair Oaks’ Rudolf Steiner College were raising consciousness on the value of urban gardens. And community garden advocates such as Sacramento’s Bill Maynard, the leadership at the Fair Oaks Horticulture Center and Mary Kimball at the nonprofit Center for Land Based Learning were spreading the gospel.
But not much of the “culture” of our agriculture was seeping into the rapidly expanding urban environment of Sacramento. In fact, it seemed there was a push regionally to shake off our “cow town” identity…
Written by Shawn Harrison and Patrick Mulvaney — Special to The Bee
Our Green Promise
We see ourselves as stewards of the land we love and, in our small way, protectors of the future.
Our Green Promise isn’t a marketing campaign. It’s a description of the way we do business, which is a direct reflection of the way we live and the values we hold dear.
It starts with our purveyors. We choose to work with farmers, ranchers, and winemakers who tread lightly upon the earth.
It continues to the ingredients we use and how we use them. When we get a duck, we use it all—in numerous dishes. We use every part of the pig but the oink. We can’t even tolerate to see butter burned, since that would fail to honor the people who worked so hard to produce it.
We’re avid com-posters. Now that we use an anaerobic digest-er, we’re more than 99-percent landfill-free. Our waste used to fill three dumpsters a week; now it barely tops a five-gallon bucket.
All our wine bottles are recycled; the clear ones find a second life in the restaurant as water pitchers. Our cardboard is recycled. Our daily menus are printed on 100-percent post-consumer waste; they’re then re-used for in-house printing needs before they return to the recycling bin. The ashes from the grill, the grounds from drained espresso cups, and leftover table water all feed our garden.
Our to-go boxes are Bio-Pak. Our disposable service-ware is environmentally friendly; our disposable cutlery is made from a bamboo byproduct and the plates and cups derive from sugarcane. It’s all sustainable and biodegradable.
Our primary equipment-rental company uses a bio-fuel for its fleet and environmentally-conscious cleaning products for its dishes and laundry.
Our restaurant typically has a half-dozen bikes parked outside, including a “shop bike” we use for getting around downtown and midtown, to the bank, business meetings, and running staff or products to offsite events.

Kasbah is incredibly culturally diverse. On any given night, one can walk through the restaurant, and hear five or six different languages being spoken. Kasbah values its unique mix of old world and new world, hosting a meeting of cultures.

Matt Woolston, owner/chef of the renowned Supper Club, launched his latest Sacramento area restaurant: Matteo’s Pizza & Bistro in the Arden Park neighborhood of Carmichael. Matteo’s has the same attention to quality and innovative cuisine that has differentiated Supper Club for the [+]past seven years but with a more casual menu and atmosphere. Matt and his wife Yvette have created a friendly, neighborhood gathering place for families and friends to enjoy great food and drinks.
They have designed an innovative menu. Pizza is the featured dish and is offered in both Italian and international varieties – but Matteo’s is not just another pizza place. The appetizers, salads, pastas, grilled entrees and Sunday Brunch are made with seasonal local ingredients and will delight the most discriminating palette. All dishes are available as take-out and Matteo’s will also cater events.
The beautiful hickory wood bar is well-stocked with over one hundred wines by the bottle and twenty-five wines by the glass. Honed over twenty years at David Berkley’s and his own Supper Club, Matt’s expertise in wine is evident in the variety of wines and the presence of many unusual and affordable choices. The beer selection is also outstanding with a dozen beers on tap as well as bottled beers. With a full bar, the bartenders will be delighted to create any cocktail and… the best Bloody Mary in town.
dsc_0034The always warm and welcoming,Yvette Woolston, manages the front of the house. Her goal is to have Matteo’s be the home-away-from-home for her friends and neighbors – an inviting place where the whole family can eat, drink, relax and laugh. Matteo’s is definitely a family affair – Yvette and Matt’s three sons, Yvette’s sisters, sister-in-law, and mother are all helping to create a bistro that folks will want to visit often.

Thai Paradise
- (East Bidwell)
- Folsom CA -
Jarunee Fleming, chef and owner of Thai Paradise Restaurant, comes from a family of special chefs for the Royal Palace of Thailand. She studied under her uncle who was the head chef of the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok Thailand , one of the most famous and prestigious hotels in the [+]world.
She brings to Thai Paradise her secret family recipes that have been handed down for centuries. For the last 12 years she has delighted thousands in Northern California with the best Thai Cuisine.
Her style of cooking is unique as she borrows from all regions of Thailand. Her basic family recipes draw on the Northeast of Thailand where she is from, but her special sauces and curries have an exotic Bangkok flavor from the Royal Thai Cuisine. She cooks from memory as her recipes are all in her head. Her real secret though, is that she loves to cook and puts love into every dish she makes.
What makes Jarunee's Thai Food so special is that it is delicious but it is also very fresh and healthy. She puts no MSG in her food and uses very little oil. It is a mixture of flavors; sweet, sour and spicy, of all the foods of the world, Thai Food is one of the most nourishing and beneficial for the body because it is full of antioxidants. Turmeric, ginger, galangal, garlic, basil and Thai chilies are just some of the antioxidant spices that that make up her Thai dishes. The reason of course for the spices originally was to preserve the food in the hot climate of Thailand before refrigeration, but it ends up giving her food both its delicious taste and good nutrition.
